Wednesday December 8th, 2010

Today marks the 30th anniversary of the day John Lennon was shot and killed outside of his Upper West Side Apartment. It was a chilling day for those around the world who considered Lennon an international icon of peace. While I wasn't even a particle of dust let alone a distant thought in my parents minds when this tragedy occurred, I can still appreciate the importance of this day and this man who stood as a symbol for peace and prosperity. It was only recently that I discovered the first place the announcement had been made public was by Howard Cosell on Monday Night Football of all places. Audio and video are below.

Every year, a memorial is held at Strawberry Fields in Central Park in Lennon's honor, and of course this year is no exception. I've also posted a fantastic link below, courtesy of WNYC, who has put together a complete list of events being held in and around NYC in honor of John Lennon including a night of tribute music at Williamsburg's Glasslands,  a gallery exhibition of photographs from Lennon's youth at The Paley Center For Media. And if you're staying in tonight, you can catch a BBC special on the man behind the music.
