Wednesday January 5th, 2011

Happy New Year one and all and more importantly, Happy National Whipped Cream Day! Yes, today January 5th, 2011 is indeed a national holiday dedicated to, of all things, whipped cream! While the exact origins of this somewhat obscure yet universal holiday is somewhat unknown, after doing some research the best evidence I've found is this day may be dedicated to Aaron Lapin, the creator of whipped cream in a can, Reddi-Wip, back in 1954. While this may sound sweet, pun intended, is it also perhaps insensitive to issues surrounding world hunger? I believe, given all of the starvation in the world, that a day dedicated to this sugary treat may actually be in somewhat of bad taste. According to a study conducted by http://www.worldhunger.org/ world hunger was measured at nearly a billion people in 2010, sixty-five percent of which live in seven countries including India, China, Dominican Republic of Congo, Bangladesh, Indonesia, Pakistan and Ethiopia. In a similar study by the U.S Agriculture Department, American food consumption has expanded over sixteen percent since 1970. I don't mean to be the fun police, because as we all know, it's always fun to have something to celebrate, even if its a trivial as whipped cream. So, I present a solution that could make everybody happy. What if the proceeds from National Whipped Cream Day are donated to those countries suffering from world hunger? I think this is a legitimate solution that would satisfy all parties. Now that we've settled the great whipped cream debate, lets take a look at some recent music news.

Renowned vocalist Josh Groban released his latest album, “Illuminations,” in November.  But on Monday night’s episode of “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” he promoted another album: “Josh Groban’s The Best Tweets of Kanye West.”

After the show aired, Groban Tweeted "It was an honor to sing these. I sincerely hope he doesn't lash out at me with sick floetry." I wouldn't hold your breath on that one J-Gro. Kanye never forgets.

In other Twitter news, on Tuesday No Doubt guitarist Tom Dumont Tweeted that the band has returned to the studio.  He wrote, “Holiday’s over. 2010 done. 10 new songs written. No Doubt’s 2011 New Year’s resolution: to record our new album...beginning TODAY!”  This will mark the band’s first studio album since 2001’s “Rock Steady.”

And in some disheartening news, rapper Gucci Mane has been committed to a mental health treatment facility in Atlanta after filing a plea for mental incompetence.  Lawyers for the MC, who is potentially facing charges on probation violations, claimed he was “unable to go forward and/or intelligently participate in the probation revocation hearing.”  Mane will remain at the facility while awaiting a hearing on his competency. God speed G-Mane, and here's to a healthy recovery.
