Wednesday March 2nd, 2011

I've noticed the word 'antisemitic' being thrown around the global blogosphere more so than usual this week. Typically, you you don't hear these words in the context of entertainment and pop-culture news very often, but from time to time someone seems to slip up, get drunk, and go on a rant about something, and who better to pick on than one of histories' most persecuted religions? First it was Charlie Sheen's seemingly malicious remark in which he referred to Chuck Lorre by his Hebrew name Chaim Levine. Sheen quickly came to his own defense saying this was not meant as an insult and I feel like we should cut the guy a little slack since he doesn't seem to know up from down these days. Is it too soon to mention how quickly Mel Gibson came to Sheen's aid? And if anyone knows about antisemitism it's Mel Gibson right? And then the video tape seen and more horribly heard 'round the world, was leaked of Christian Dior designer John Galliano promoting hateful rants about his love of Hitler and hatred of the Jews as he was sitting alone in a Paris bar. The result of which has not only gotten him fired, now according to the latest gossip, Galliano is seeking rehab. Is there such a thing as anti-Semitic rehab? Oh right..it's for the alcohol..because that's what these neo-nazis in wolves clothing are blaming it on these days. It really never ceases to amaze me how dense people can truly be. More so than anything it's just plain sad. One thing that all of these hate-mongers seem to have in common: they're always 'sorry.' One can only wonder where this animosity comes from; whether is was learned or taught, and if it was taught then why? Antisemitism is defined in Wikipedia as "hostility towards Jews often rooted in hatred of their ethnic background, culture, and/or religion. In it's extreme form it 'attributes to the Jews and exceptional position among other civilizations, defames them as an inferior group and denies their being part of the nations in which they reside." The words hate and inferior are pretty powerful in and of themselves, and one can only imagine what would incite that strong of an emotion, especially against an entire organized religion. Whatever the case, it would be nice to see some form of legal action slapped against one of these hate-perpetrators, and sooner rather than later before these two words become more common place than they already are.

Talk about a Fall from grace.
