Monday November 29th, 2010

The internet will be much quieter this week, thanks to Alicia Keys.  Keys has enlisted musicians like Lady Gaga, Usher, and Justin Timberlake to temporarily quit social media sites such as Twitter and Facebook until $1 million has been raised for her charity Keep a Child Alive, an organization supporting families in Africa affected by HIV and AIDS.  The stars have each filmed “last tweet and testament” videos and will appear in ads in which they lie in coffins to represent their digital deaths.  The Digital Life Sacrifice begins on Wednesday, which is World AIDS Day.

Yoko Ono has given permission for a new verse to be added to John Lennon’s classic song “Give Peace a Chance.”  Ono was approached by Yolanda Vega, the founder of Peacebeliever, and the new version was performed by the Orquesta Buena Vista Social Club.  Proceeds from the sale of the single will benefit the Australian Children’s Music Foundation.

Willie Nelson was arrested in Texas on Friday after the US Border Patrol discovered 6 ounces of marijuana on his tour bus.  Following a brief stint in custody, the country legend was released on a $2,500 bond.  This is Nelson’s third arrest for marijuana possession, and if convicted on this charge he could face up to two years in prison.  Nelson’s harmonica player Mickey Raphael later spoke to Rolling Stone about the incident, saying “he said he feels great – he lost six ounces.”
